Atari’s resurrecting the Intellivision, one of its biggest competitors in the ‘80s

Atari, in collaboration with Plaion, has introduced a new retro console titled the Intellivision Sprint, reviving hardware from Mattel’s iconic Intellivision, which originally competed with the Atari 2600 upon its launch in 1979. The new console aims to combine the aesthetics of the 1980s with contemporary gaming features.

The Intellivision Sprint retains the vintage look of the original model, characterized by a gold and black casing with a wood-grain panel at the front. However, it modernizes the experience by utilizing a single HDMI cable for TV connectivity, significantly reducing cable clutter. The console is equipped with two wireless controllers, which feature dials and number pads instead of traditional joysticks. These controllers are rechargeable and designed to dock directly to the console.

In terms of functionality, the Sprint includes the number pad overlays from the original Intellivision, updated with new designs and artwork to facilitate gameplay. The console boasts 45 pre-installed games, including titles like Boulder Dash and Astrosmash, as well as a collection of notable sports games from the original console era. It should be noted that, while the Sprint does not support the use of cartridges, it features USB-A ports that allow for additional game titles to be played or for the connection of original Intellivision controllers via an adapter.

The Intellivision Sprint is priced at $149.99 and is currently available for preorder, with anticipated shipping commencing on December 5, 2025.
