The United States Mint has announced the design for a commemorative $1 coin that will honor Steve Jobs, the late co-founder and former CEO of Apple. The coin features an image of a young Jobs sitting cross-legged with a California landscape of rolling hills in the background. He is depicted wearing a turtleneck, and the design includes the inscription “Make something wonderful,” a quote attributed to Jobs from 2007 that his estate has used to highlight his philosophy and impact.
The coin is set to retail for $13.25 on the Mint’s website, but it will not be available until 2026. This coin is part of a long-term initiative that began in 2018, celebrating American innovation. Each state has the opportunity to nominate an icon for recognition through this program. For instance, Wisconsin has selected the Cray-1 supercomputer, a notable technological advancement from the mid-1970s, which will also be featured in 2026.
California Governor Gavin Newsom nominated Jobs in February, stating that he represents a distinctive type of innovation that is emblematic of California’s identity. This initiative allows for personal and state contributions to the narrative of American innovation, prompting questions about the criteria for selection and the overall representation of innovation across different states.
