California governor candidate says she ‘fell short’ in viral videos

A Democratic candidate for California governor, Katie Porter, has publicly apologized following the release of videos showing her confrontational interactions with a news reporter and a former staff member. In her first comments addressing the issue since the videos gained attention, Porter acknowledged that she “fell short” and expressed regret to the staffer for her conduct. The videos depict Porter threatening to leave an interview with a CBS news reporter and displaying aggressive behavior towards a staff member in a separate incident from 2021.

Porter, regarded as a frontrunner to succeed Gavin Newsom, is facing scrutiny from within her party, with some members questioning her suitability for the role. As the June 2026 primary approaches, it remains unclear if other candidates will join the race. During a recent interview on Inside California Politics, Porter was asked about her temperament for the governor’s position and reiterated her commitment to take responsibility for her actions.

Having previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2019 to 2025, Porter gained recognition for her effective questioning style during congressional hearings. With Newsom unable to seek re-election, Porter emerged as a leading candidate, particularly after former Vice President Kamala Harris decided not to run. There is still potential for new candidates to enter the race, with California Senator Alex Padilla being encouraged to consider a run.
