Vivienne Westwood’s granddaughter criticises company as Riyadh fashion week deal announced | Vivienne Westwood

Cora Corré, granddaughter of the late Vivienne Westwood, expressed that the current direction of the Vivienne Westwood brand does not reflect her grandmother’s values. This comment comes as the brand announces its participation in Riyadh Fashion Week, alongside designer Stella McCartney, despite global concerns regarding Saudi Arabia’s human rights practices.

The Vivienne Foundation, established by Westwood prior to her death in 2022, is set to release a series of T-shirts this week, with part of the proceeds aimed at supporting LGBTQ+ charities. Corré indicated that she was not aware of the timing of the T-shirt launch coinciding with the Riyadh event until informed by a friend. She stated, “What I do feel confident in saying and knowing is that she would feel as if the company does not align with her values or wishes.”

The Vivienne Westwood brand defended its decision to showcase in Riyadh, stating that it views fashion as a medium for cultural exchange and dialogue, purporting that its presence at the event should not be interpreted as an endorsement of the Saudi government or its policies. Human Rights Watch has voiced strong criticism of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, labelling it “abysmal” and highlighting the nation’s tendency to use substantial investments in sports and cultural events to obscure this record.

Amnesty International has also urged public figures to raise awareness regarding the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in Saudi Arabia, where same-sex relations are illegal. The Vivienne Westwood label reiterated its position that engagement in such events aims to foster understanding and amplify diverse voices.

Joey Shea, a researcher for Human Rights Watch, noted that Saudi authorities employ significant measures to suppress dissent, including severe penalties for criticism. Stella McCartney’s response to the situation is pending.
