Samsung is set to provide additional information regarding its Project Moohan mixed reality headset. The company has announced a “Worlds Wide Open” Galaxy event scheduled for October 21st at 10 PM ET, during which details about the device will be shared.
The headset will operate on Android XR, a new mixed reality platform created in collaboration with Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm. Samsung states that the headset is engineered to accommodate various form factors and aims to integrate AI into immersive daily experiences. A demonstration of the headset and Android XR was conducted in late 2024, suggesting that Samsung is preparing for the headset’s full market introduction.
Samsung describes Project Moohan as the first product designed for the open and scalable Android XR platform, claiming it merges everyday practicality with innovative experiences. The company asserts that this is where the true potential of XR is realized, opening up new possibilities for users.
This announcement comes amidst reports that Apple is nearing the release of a new version of its Vision Pro headset, which is said to feature a more powerful processor. Additionally, a device resembling the new Vision Pro has appeared in FCC filings. There are indications that Apple may be shifting its focus away from headsets toward the development of smart glasses, as the company seems to have deprioritized work on a lighter version of the Vision Pro.
This situation poses questions about the competitive landscape in the mixed reality and augmented reality markets, especially given the contrasting strategies of industry leaders like Samsung and Apple.
