Madagascar crowds cheer as military unit seizes power

An elite military unit in Madagascar has announced it has taken control from President Andry Rajoelina, a decision that follows weeks of protests led by youth over ongoing water and power shortages in the country. Following this announcement, celebrations were reported in the capital city, Antananarivo.

Col. Michael Randrianirina, the head of the military unit known as CAPSAT (Personnel Administration and Technical and Administrative Services Corps), stated that the military intends to establish a new government and conduct elections within a two-year timeframe.

The whereabouts of President Rajoelina remain unclear; however, he reported that he is in a “safe place” amid claims of an assassination attempt involving military personnel and politicians. The CAPSAT unit has denied any involvement in this alleged attempt on the president’s life.

The situation in Madagascar has prompted discussions about the stability of its political landscape and the implications of military involvement in governance.
