An elite military unit in Madagascar has claimed to have taken control of the government from President Andry Rajoelina, following weeks of protests primarily led by young people. Colonel Michael Randrianirina, head of the military unit known as CAPSAT, announced outside the presidential palace that a new government would be formed and elections would be held within two years. He stated that democratic institutions, including the electoral commission, have been suspended, and he emphasized the role of Gen Z protesters in the ongoing changes.
The protests, which initially focused on issues such as chronic water shortages and power cuts, escalated to broader grievances related to high unemployment and corruption. Clashes between protesters and security forces have resulted in a reported death toll of at least 22 people, although the government disputes these figures.
CAPSAT, described as Madagascar’s most powerful military unit, had previously supported Rajoelina when he gained power in 2009 but joined the protesters in recent demonstrations. The constitutional court has now named Randrianirina as the new leader, despite Rajoelina’s claim of remaining in charge and his office’s characterization of the military’s actions as an “attempted coup d’état.” Rajoelina’s current whereabouts are unclear; he has mentioned taking refuge in a secure location following rumors of threats against his life. Some reports suggest he may have been evacuated from the country on a French military aircraft.
The U.S. State Department has called for all involved to seek a peaceful resolution consistent with constitutional processes. The African Union also expressed concerns about military involvement in political affairs and rejected any unconstitutional government changes. Madagascar, known for its significant poverty, has experienced political instability in recent years, raising questions about the future governance of the nation in the wake of these events.
