A police officer in Kenya has died after being shot with an arrow while on duty at a gate of the presidential residence, State House, in Nairobi. According to police reports, the incident occurred on Monday morning when a 56-year-old man approached the officers stationed at the gate. When asked to surrender, he instead advanced towards them and shot Officer Ramadhan Matanka in the ribs.
Following the attack, Officer Matanka was transported to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries during treatment. His body has since been taken to a mortuary, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled. Officials are conducting an investigation to determine the motive behind the assault.
Local reports indicate that Officer Matanka was involved in screening vehicles entering State House. The alleged assailant, who reportedly disguised himself as a homeless individual carrying a sack that concealed the bow and arrows, was apprehended immediately after the incident. Video footage broadcasted by Kenyan television shows a handcuffed man with visible injuries, suggesting he was receiving hospital treatment following his detention.
This event has prompted scrutiny regarding potential security lapses at a location known for its high level of security. The suspect is expected to appear in court later this week. A police spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, noted the National Police Service’s condemnation of the attack and praised the officers’ prompt response, which he said prevented further harm. He expressed condolences to Officer Matanka’s family, referring to the fallen officer’s sacrifice in the line of duty.
