Former US President Joe Biden is receiving radiation therapy as part of his treatment for diagnosed prostate cancer, as confirmed by his spokesman. Biden, who is 82 years old, is also undergoing hormone treatment, although no further details were provided. The radiation therapy is expected to last five weeks, marking a new phase in his medical care, according to a source speaking to NBC News.
In May, Biden’s office disclosed that he had been diagnosed with a more aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. This diagnosis followed his report of urinary symptoms, which led doctors to discover a small nodule on his prostate. At that time, it was stated that Biden’s cancer had a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), indicating a high-grade disease that could spread quickly.
The Biden office indicated that while the cancer is more aggressive, it appears to be hormone-sensitive, allowing for effective management. A person close to Biden has reported that he is responding well to treatment, with radiation therapy starting a few weeks ago in Philadelphia.
Biden served as the oldest president in US history until he left office in January, and concerns about his health were prevalent during his first term. Following his decision not to seek re-election, former Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic candidate but ultimately lost to current President Donald Trump.
Biden has long advocated for cancer research, having relaunched the “cancer moonshot” initiative in 2022 alongside his wife, Jill Biden, with aims to prevent over four million cancer deaths by 2047. His family history includes the loss of his eldest son, Beau, to brain cancer in 2015. Additionally, Biden has been treated for skin cancer twice, once in 2023 and again in 2025.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, according to the American Cancer Society, with the CDC noting that 13 out of every 100 men will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime, primarily affecting older individuals.
