Madagascar presidency says attempt to seize power under way

The office of Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has reported an ongoing attempt to seize power illegally and unconstitutionally in the country. This announcement follows a claim by an army unit known as CAPSAT, which stated that it has taken over the leadership of the military command and assumed control of all armed forces, including land, air, and naval operations.

CAPSAT is notable for its involvement in the 2009 Malagasy political crisis, which facilitated Rajoelina’s rise to power. The current unrest in Madagascar initially began on September 25, prompted by protests against water and power shortages. However, the protests have progressed to reflect broader dissatisfaction with Rajoelina’s administration, particularly concerning high unemployment rates, corruption, and a rising cost of living.

In his statement, Rajoelina condemned the power seizure attempt as a violation of constitutional and democratic principles. He urged key national forces to unite in protecting the constitutional order and national sovereignty. Following this, CAPSAT announced the appointment of a new chief of staff, General Demosthene Pikulas, through a statement on its Facebook page.

On Sunday morning, there were reports of a shoot-out at the CAPSAT camp after discussions with gendarmerie officials, though specific details regarding the incident remain unavailable. Additionally, on Saturday, some soldiers reportedly left their barracks near the capital, Antananarivo, to join protesters gathered in front of the town hall.

CAPSAT has criticized the use of force by security personnel in response to recent protests. A statement from the presidency assured the public that Rajoelina, alongside the newly appointed prime minister, an army general chosen the previous week, retains control over the situation.
