Boox’s new smartphone-sized e-readers come with a steep price hike

The Boox P6 Pro and P6 Pro Color are the latest offerings from Boox, featuring enhanced E Ink displays. The P6 Pro has a 6.13-inch black-and-white Carta 1300 display, priced at 2,799 Chinese yuan (approximately $393). The P6 Pro Color utilizes a 6.13-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 color screen, similar to those found in some Kobo e-readers, and is available at a higher price of 3,299 CNY (around $463). Both devices are currently available with launch discounts, reducing their costs to 2,516 CNY ($353) and 2,991 CNY ($420), respectively. However, the final prices may increase due to US tariffs upon their potential release in the United States.

Each device comes equipped with 128GB of storage, expandable to 2TB via a microSD card, a 16MP camera, and a 3,950mAh battery, operating on a customized version of Android 13. Notably, the P6 Pro Color has an upgraded RAM of 8GB and supports stylus use for note-taking. Both models are also equipped with a SIM card slot, granting access to 5G mobile data, marking them as Boox’s first compact e-readers offering this feature.

Unlike other smart devices with E Ink screens, such as the Bigme Hibreak Pro launched earlier this year, the P6 Pro models do not function as smartphone replacements and lack calling capabilities. This may raise questions about the appeal of their pricing compared to competition in the market.
