Recent missile and drone strikes by Russia have resulted in power outages across significant parts of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. The city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported that nine individuals sustained injuries due to these attacks, which also led to disruptions in water supply for residents in eastern districts. In a separate incident in the Zaporizhzhia region, a seven-year-old child was killed following another Russian drone strike, as stated by the regional head.
Ukraine’s Energy Minister, Svitlana Hrynchuk, indicated that these strikes were part of a “massive” operation targeting various facilities nationwide. Repair crews are currently engaged in efforts to restore the electricity supply. Many residents reported facing extensive power cuts, with images emerging of firefighters combating fires in residential buildings affected by the strikes.
Ivan Fedorov, the regional leader of Zaporizhzhia, confirmed that the city experienced intense strikes overnight, resulting in fatal and non-fatal injuries. The region has been subjected to a series of air raids during the last few nights, particularly in areas under Russian control.
The Ukrainian government remains on high alert for possible hypersonic Kinzhal missile attacks, which pose detection challenges. President Volodymyr Zelensky asserted that Russia appears to be deliberately targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with previous attacks already impacting gas facilities. Authorities are preparing for the likelihood of additional assaults on energy resources and infrastructure.
