She warned that linking the service’s financial support to government defense priorities could compromise its journalistic independence.
Recent reports revealed that senior BBC officials are advocating for increased funding for the World Service, seeking resources beyond its traditional budget source—the Foreign Office. With significant investments by China and Russia in overseas media aimed at expanding their influence, BBC executives argue that the World Service is crucial for combating misinformation and promoting Western values.
Landor expressed reservations about the potential implications of intertwining the World Service’s role with national defense objectives, stating that journalism must remain independent and focused on truth and accountability. Mary Hockaday, another former BBC World Service controller, emphasized the importance of maintaining editorial independence, regardless of funding sources. She noted that while discussions about defense-related funding might have validity, safeguards must be in place to protect journalistic integrity.
Jonathan Munro, the current director of the World Service, mentioned a desire to diversify funding sources across government departments. Approximately one-third of the World Service’s £400 million budget currently comes from the Foreign Office. The push for increased funding is in response to escalating global tensions, with BBC General Secretary Tim Davie aiming to broaden the service’s reach.
This increase in funding aligns with recent trends in international media, notably following the former Trump administration’s cuts to Voice of America, which traditionally countered foreign media influences. The ongoing U.S. government shutdown has also impacted Voice of America, reflecting the complexities surrounding media funding and national security interests.
